A temporary or emergency passport is a special kind of passport valid for a limited period of time. It is usually issued by an embassy or consulate. Temporary passports are usually issued to nationals of the issuing country who are currently stranded abroad without a valid passport and need one urgently to travel.

If you are traveling within 15 business days, we may elect to issue you an emergency U.S. passport, which will be limited to a maximum of 12 months validity. These passports are generally processed and issued on the same day as we receive a completed passport application.
Please be informed that the Department of Home Affairs will no longer issue Temporary Passports as from 01 September 2014. South African citizens travelling abroad as well as to the neighbouring states are refused entry into a number of countries when travelling on Temporary Passports.

Types of passports

Answer: As an American citizen, you are now required to leave and return to the United States with a valid U.S. passport. You cannot travel while your U.S. passport application is still in pending or in process. The only way you can get a passport issued sooner is by applying in person at a regional agency.
