The world's most powerful passports
Asian countries currently hold the three highest passport rankings in 2022, with Japan taking the top spot. Before the pandemic, European nations dominated the rankings, signalling the lingering impact of COVID-19 and subsequent restrictions on the region.
The weakest passport, once again, is Afghanistan. Afghan people can only visit 27 countries without the need for a visa.
Americans can get into 186 international destinations without applying for additional visas in advance. Passports from New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland and Belgium have the same level of access. "The U.S. is still an incredibly strong passport," said Dominic Volek, group head of private clients for Henley & Partners.
French nationality remained the best in the world according to the 2018 edition of the Quality of Nationality Index, earning a score of 83.5% out of a possible 100%, fractionally ahead of Germany and the Netherlands.
The British passport is the world's sixth most powerful with visa-free or visa on-arrival access to 187 countries. The UK passport was one place ahead of the US at 186 countries, while EU states dominated much of the top rankings, data from Henley & Partners' 2022 Henley Passport Index showed.
Canada regularly features among the countries with the world's most powerful passports, offering visa-free access, which is seen as a measurement of the freedom of citizens of a country, to 185 destinations.
Those who travel with this type of passport are members of Congress, members of the military, family members of military personnel, and any other private citizen who might be conducting international travel at the request of the government. A red passport is only issued to people who are at least 18 years of age.
Passports are ranked based on their Mobility Score. The higher the Mobility Score, the better the Passport Power Rank. Countries are ranked by the number of passports they accept visa-free or with visa on arrival.

For some countries, the choice of color relates to a predominant religion. But the U.S. passport is more powerful. Canadians have it pretty easy when it comes to travel — at least in non-pandemic times. With visa-free access to 185 countries, Canadians enjoy one of the best-ranked passports in the world according to the latest ranking from the Henley Passport Index.
As of April 2021, German citizens had visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 191 countries and territories, ranking the German passport third in the world in terms of travel freedom (tied with the South Korean passport) as well as the most powerful passport in Europe and the EU according to the Henley Passport Index.
With a high mobility score it is one of the most desirable passports in the world. Canadian passport holders have visa-free access and visas on arrival to countries such as Japan, the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, the United States and the entire European Union.
The British Armed Forces are a professional force with a strength of 153,290 UK Regulars and Gurkhas, 37,420 Volunteer Reserves and 8,170 "Other Personnel" as of 1 April 2021. This gives a total strength of 198,880 "UK Service Personnel".
As of 19 July 2022, Russian citizens had visa-free or visa on arrival access to 119 countries and territories, ranking the Russian passport 50th in terms of travel freedom according to the Henley Passport Index.
British citizenship allows you to live and work in the United Kingdom free from UK immigration controls. As a British citizen, you are also entitled to a UK passport that you can use to travel freely in and out of the country.
