When the Marines began recruiting women reservists seven months ago, the Corps decided that its uniformed women would carry no telescoped name like WACs, WAVES or SPARS; they would be Marines. But "women Marines" is a lip-twisting phrase. "She-Marines" (TIME, June 21) was frowned on, too.
From then until the end of World War I, 305 women had enlisted in the Marines. They were often nicknamed "Marinettes", and helped with the office duties at the Headquarters Marine Corps, so the men who usually worked the administrative roles could be sent to France to help fight in the war.
When she assumes the role, Opha Mae will earn the rank of private. Opha Mae shares the honor of being a “first” with her namesake, Opha May Johnson. In 1918, at 40 years old, Johnson enlisted in the Marine Corps and became the first ever female Marine — two years before women were even allowed to vote.

The term "leatherneck" transcended the actual use of the leather stock and became a common nickname for United States Marines.
15. POGs and Grunts – Though every Marine is a trained rifleman, infantry Marines (03XX MOS) lovingly call their non-infantry brothers and sisters POGs (pronounced “pogue,”) which is an acronym that stands for Personnel Other than Grunts.
“Rah.” or “Rah!” or “Rah?” Short for “Oohrah,” a Marine greeting or expression of enthusiasm similar to the Army's “Hooah” or the Navy's “Hooyah.” Rah, however, is a bit more versatile.
Oorah is a battle cry common in the United States Marine Corps since the mid-20th century. It is comparable to hooah in the US Army and hooyah in the US Navy and US Coast Guard. It is most commonly used to respond to a verbal greeting or as an expression of enthusiasm.
“Semper Fidelis” (“Always Faithful”) is the motto of the Corps. That Marines have lived up to this motto is proved by the fact that there has never been a mutiny, or even the thought of one, among U.S. Marines. Semper Fidelis was adopted about 1883 as the motto of the Corps.
Semper fi' and 'oorah' are not common phrases that civilians say, but it is a resounding sign of respect. Semper fi' is an acronym for “Semper” and “fight.” This phrase originated in 1369 in Abbeville, France, and has been adopted by numerous European towns and families since the 16th century.
Over the last decade, U.S. and Marine Corps officials have made historic strides in creating a more integrated military service. Between 2013 and 2016, the military removed the ban on women serving in combat Military Occupational Specialties in a phased approach allowing women into all combat related job fields.
Tens of thousands of U.S. women participated in the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq this century. Though not directly assigned combat roles, some saw action and were killed as the battle lines shifted. The crucible has been part of Marine Corps training since the 1990s.
In the Marine Corps, it begins at segregated boot camp with the informal, but persistent identification of female Marines as “wooks” or “walking mattresses” — terms suggesting that women in the ranks exist to supply, and advance their careers by offering, sexual gratification for their male counterparts, normalizing ...
"Leatherneck"
Also mandated was a leather stock to be worn by officers and enlisted men alike. This leather collar served to protect the neck against cutlass slashes and to hold the head erect in proper military bearing. Sailors serving aboard ship with Marines came to call them “leathernecks.”
The phrase “jarheads” is also a slang phrase used by sailors when referring to Marines. The term first appeared as early as World War II and referred to Marines' appearance wearing their dress blue uniforms. The high collar on the uniform and the Marines' head popping out of the top resembled a Mason Jar.

They are not soldiers. They are Marines. Marines are distinguished by their mission, their training, their history, their uniform and their esprit de corps. You would not call a sailor a soldier, an airman a soldier, and certainly you should not call a Marine a soldier.

Never lie, never cheat or steal; abide by an uncompromising code of integrity; respect human dignity and respect others. Honor compels Marines to act responsibly, to fulfill our obligations and to hold ourselves and others accountable for every action.
Since military sidewalks are usually straight lines that intersect each other at 90-degree angles, a young private may save a half of a second by cutting through the grass. If enough troops cut that same corner, then the grass will die and become a path, thus destroying the need for the sidewalk to begin with.
Oscar Mike is military lingo for “On the Move” and was specifically chosen to represent the spirit of its founder and the Veterans he serves.
"Veteran marine" or "former marine" can refer to anyone who has been discharged honorably from the Corps. "Retired marine" refers to those who have completed 20 or more years of service and formally retired or have been medically retired after less than 20 years service. "Sir" or "Ma'am" is appropriate out of respect.

Devil Dog is a motivational nickname for a U.S. Marine. It is said to be based on the apocryphal use of "Teufel Hunden" [sic] by German soldiers to describe Marines fighting in World War I.
