Russia's Spetsnaz [Special Designation] forces are light infantry forces that are largely configured for reconnaissance, counterinsurgency, and power-projection missions, more comparable to the U.S. 75th Ranger Regiment or the British 16th Air Assault Brigade than to true special forces.
In Russia, foreign special operations forces are also referred to as spetsnaz (for example, United States special operations forces would be called amerikanskiy spetsnaz).
Green Beret is the 6th episode of the 1st season of the TV Show Deadliest Warrior. It pitted the American Green Beret against the Russian Spetsnaz. In the end, the Spetsnaz came out on top.
The Latin-script letter Z (Russian: зет, tr. zet, IPA: [zɛt]) is one of several symbols (including "V" and "O") painted on military vehicles of the Russian Armed Forces involved in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. It is speculated that the Z helps task forces distinguish themselves from other forces.
Russia's female Spetsnaz
Spetsnaz has allowed female members for some time, and women have been incorporated into Spetsnav officer training in recent years.
Incorporating lessons from Western special operations forces, the Russian military has established its own equivalent of the U.S. Army's elite 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta—better known as Delta Force. This new force is called Special Operations Command, known by its Russian acronym as KSSO.
